Oaxaca is located in Southern Mexico and is bordered by the states of Chiapas, Guerrero, and Vera Cruz. Oaxaca is one of the poorest states in all of Mexico, yet it is rich in tradition and culture. Its landscape varies from lush, green vegetation, to high mountain ranges, to dry desert like plateaus. Besides fruit and vegetables, Oaxaca is known for coffee, chocolate, and molé negro. Oaxaca's coast is known for its world renoun surfing and beautiful beaches.
Oaxaca is home to 16 major Indian tribes who have intermixed and now there are at least 155 different dialects. Athough Spanish is widely spoken, there are hundreds of thousands who still speak their indigenous language. Sadly, many of these indigenous people groups live without any light of the Gospel. There are people groups and villages where the Gospel has not reached. Oaxaca is home to the most unreached people groups in all of the North American countries combined.
Oaxaca has market towns located throughout the entire state. These market towns vary in size, but usually have anywhere from five to ten thousand residents. Surrounding these towns, usually within a couple hours walk or drive, are smaller villages where the people come to the market town buy and sell. A majority of these smaller villages have a main trade. For example, one town may make rugs and blankets; another may make black pottery; another may grow coffee; and another carve wooden figures called alebrijes.
Oaxaca is a beautiful place, but it is also one that is in desparate need of the Gospel. What part will you have in getting the Gospel to Oaxaca?
